Pulsed Light Laser (IPL) & Photorejuvenation in Courtenay, BC
Achieve Radiant, Even-Toned Skin with Lumecca™ IPL Technology
Do you struggle with sun damage, stubborn redness, or “age spots” that won’t fade? At Coastal Dermatology & Medical Aesthetics, we provide industry-leading Pulsed Light Laser treatments (often called IPL or Photofacials) to help you restore a youthful, clear complexion without the need for surgery or significant downtime.
What is Pulsed Light Laser (IPL)?
Pulsed Light Laser, or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses high-intensity pulses of broad-spectrum light to improve the color and texture of your skin.
Unlike traditional lasers that use a single wavelength, IPL emits multiple wavelengths of light energy. This energy targets specific pigments in the skin, such as the red in broken capillaries and the brown in sunspots. The light converts to heat, safely breaking down the pigment or cauterizing overactive vessels, allowing your body to naturally clear them away
What Does IPL Treat?
- Sun Damage & Photo-aging: Reverses the effects of UV exposure.
- Hyperpigmentation: Fades age spots, freckles, and “liver spots.”
- Vascular Lesions: Reduces the appearance of rosacea, spider veins, and broken capillaries.
- Skin Texture: Refines enlarged pores and smooths fine lines.
- Full Body Care: While the face is most common, we also treat the neck, chest (décolletage), shoulders, arms, and hands.
Why Choose Lumecca™ at Coastal Dermatology?
We use the Lumecca platform, widely regarded as the “gold standard” in IPL technology. Lumecca delivers a higher peak power than standard IPL devices, which often means:
- Fewer Sessions: Many patients see significant results in just 1–3 treatments, compared to the 5–6 required by older machines.
- Faster Results: Initial improvements are often visible within 1–2 weeks.
- Enhanced Comfort: Built-in cooling technology ensures a more comfortable experience.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Skin tags can be removed with minimal scarring through electrocautery. This is a safe and effective alternative treatment.
Is it painful?
Most patients describe the sensation as a light “snap” of a rubber band against the skin. We prioritize your comfort and can discuss topical numbing options if you have sensitive skin.
Is there downtime?
IPL is a “lunchtime” procedure. You may experience slight redness or a mild warming sensation (similar to a light sunburn) for a few hours post-treatment. Dark spots may temporarily darken before flaking off—this is a sign the treatment is working!
How many treatments will I need?
Depending on your skin goals, we typically recommend a series of 1 to 6 treatments spaced several weeks apart. During your consultation, our expert aesthetic technicians will create a customized plan tailored to your skin type
Are You a Candidate for IPL?
IPL is highly effective for lighter to medium skin tones. Because the laser targets pigment, it is not recommended for:
- Naturally dark skin tones or deeply tanned skin.
- Individuals on light-sensitive medications (like certain antibiotics or Accutane).
- Pregnant or nursing women.
