Aging

Aging skin is a natural occurrence, and by far one of the most commonly treated skin conditions by physicians worldwide. Age-related skin issues can include dryness, wrinkles or fine lines, broken capillaries, age spots, dull texture, and thinning skin resulting in a sunken appearance.

Luckily, a number of effective treatments are available to improve lines, wrinkling, laxity and volume loss that can be a result of aging. In addition, a number of topical anti-aging products are also available to promote more youthful-looking skin.

Treatments:

Neuromodulators: Botox*

Treat dynamic wrinkles, those caused by muscle movement such as smiling or frowning.

Neuromodulators work to reduce muscle activity by blocking nerve impulses that cause the muscle to contract. Used in medicine for more than 30 years, neuromodulators help to treat a variety of conditions such as muscle spasms, strabismus (crossed eyes), and excessive sweating, to name a few.

In cosmetic medicine, neuromodulators are used to soften or eliminate wrinkles, typically treating wrinkles on the forehead, crow’s feet, frown lines and lines around the mouth. The product takes about three to seven days to come into effect and results last for around three to six months.

*Injectable Botox and Dermal fillers should always be administered by a certified physician, such as Dr. Stephen Burgess, or a certified medical professional under the direct supervision of a certified physician as per the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

Dermal Fillers*

Treat static wrinkles, those that are visible when the face is relaxed and at rest. Dermal fillers are used for facial volume and deeper wrinkles.

Dermal fillers last 6-24 months depending on the site, and are primarily made from hyaluronic acid – a sugar naturally found in our bodies. It is a powerful moisture-binding molecule that holds up to 1000 times its weight in water. Babies are born with a high level of hyaluronic acid in their skin, which is why their skin looks so soft.

In cosmetic medicine, dermal fillers are used to plump up deep wrinkles and nasolabial folds on the face. They can add volume to sunken areas such as temples, cheeks, and tear troughs, and can also be used for lip augmentation. Results typically last nine to twelve months. There are many different types of fillers on the market that are used to treat various areas on the face and types of wrinkles. Our physicians are experts at selecting the right dermal filler for you.

* Our clinic stocks Hyalurondaise, which is a family of enzymes that aid in dissolving hyaluronic acid found in dermal fillers; it is kept on hand in case there is a complication with the dermal filler. Always ask your cosmetic professional if this is stocked.

Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is caused by a specialized organism that lives off of the keratin found in nails and skin. Fungus can be contracted via the smallest of nicks in the skin, especially around the toenails. Fungus thrives in moist, warm environments, making shoe-enclosed feet the perfect home. Common sources of infection are swimming pools, public showers, gyms and improperly sanitized nail care equipment.

One or more of the following symptoms could indicate the presence of a fungal infection: discoloured nails, yellow streaks under the nails, distorted or thickening nails, brittle, crumbly or ragged nails, nails separated from the underlying skin, build-up of debris under the nail and/or white spots or streaks on the nail surface.

Pigmentation and melasma

Many people struggle with hyperpigmentation and melasma, as they are common skin conditions in which an area of skin is darker than its surrounding area. Hyperpigmentation may refer to any darkening of the skin, including sun spots and age spots. Melasma, on the other hand, is a pigmentary condition that appears as a discolouration of the skin that can be triggered by UV exposure.

We provide a number of treatments to help promote an even skin tone and reduce discolouration, blotchiness, and hyperpigmentation. Usage of medical-grade skincare products, or a prescription may be beneficial.

Plantar warts

Plantar warts are growths caused by the HPV virus that enters through small cuts or breaks on the bottom of the feet, most commonly on the heels or soles. Warts are rarely dangerous, but they are unsightly, and can cause irritation or pain, depending on their location. Either way, we highly recommend booking a free consultation with one of our skincare clinicians to evaluate and determine a course of treatment.

Rosacea and facial veins

Rosacea is a common, chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes irregular redness or flushing of the face, particularly in the cheeks or nasal areas. Every case is unique, and we are able to treat rosacea in a number of different ways, depending on your individual situation and the severity of your condition.

A number of topical skincare products may also be beneficial in combating the effects of rosacea and facial veins.

Scarring and stretch marks

Scarring and stretch marks may technically be classified as the same problem, but dermatologists recognize that there’ a major difference between the two. Scarring is a result of trauma sustained by the skin, while stretch marks occur naturally as a result of weight changes or fluctuations. At least one, if not both, is present on nearly all adult human bodies. If yours are affecting your confidence or comfort, we can help.

We provide a number of treatments for repairing minor sun damage, and we work on a referral basis for medical dermatology skin cancer treatments and screening. A number of skincare products and SPF creams are also available to help treat sun-damaged skin.
